America’s Funniest Guy

It was probably a bit much for B-10 pollsters to expect the San Francisco/Chicago showdown to be so bad both teams could be issued losses. I mean, the NFL can’t even produce a winner for every game, so producing two losers is probably a bit much to ask.

But with the winless Browns enjoying a week off, San Francisco’s loss does give it the top spot this week, as the race for the Dan Henning Trophy – symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – really heats up.

This week’s mess, as the nags head for home:

  1. San Francisco 49ers (1-11; lost to Chicago 26-6) – Niners secure top ranking for at least a week in exciting come-from-ahead road loss…Six (6)-yards passing, six (6) point performance leaves B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” this is first 1-to-1 Passing-Yards-To-Points-Scored ration in “like, a really long time’…Next Loss: New York Jets

2. New York Jets (3-9; lost Colts 41-10) – 36-yards rushing, three interceptions, 24-3 halftime deficit all ensure Jets never in this one in attention-grabbing Monday night loss…Sunday’s showdown at San Francisco prime opportunity to secure medal stand berth in B-10 “statement” game…Next Loss: at San Francisco

3. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-10; lost to Denver 20-10) – Owner Genghis Khan, pleased with current seven-game skid,  has backed off beheadings pledge if Jaguars can lose out…This could be tough, as last three (3) games against fellow AFC South opponents…Next Loss: Minnesota

4. Chicago Bears (3-9; defeated San Francisco 26-6) – Bears simply not bad enough in quest for first B-10 title, as rare win boots Midgets of Midway from medal stand…Fan(s) up in arms, as Bears fall behind Jaguars in B-10 survey despite losing to Jaguars earlier in season… …Next Loss: at Detroit

5. Philadelphia Eagles (5-7; lost to Cincinnati 32-14) – Last week B-10 pollsters fretted Eagles five (5) wins might be too many for coveted B-10 medal stand spot, but they aren’t so sure anymore after impressive, third straight loss…Total team effort sees offense punt or miss field goals the entire first half, as defense does its part to secure 19-0 halftime deficit…Next Loss: Washington

6. Cincinnati Bengals (4-7-1; defeated Philadelphia 32-14) – Bengals caught looking ahead to this week’s showdown with Cleveland, as not even Bengals bad enough to blow 29-0 lead…While B-10 medal stand berth still possible if they lose out, long-suffering Bengal fan(s) again left to wonder what might have been had B-10 title dreams again put on hold…Next Loss: at Cleveland

7. Carolina Panthers (4-8; lost to Seattle 40-7) – Defending NFC champions can’t even follow dress code, much less complicated NFL playbooks this season…Panthers primed for strong B-10 stretch run with second straight loss…Next Loss: San Diego

8. AFC South (20-28) – Juggernaut division now default, go-to selection for coveted B-10 Pete Rozelle Award, issued to NFL’s worst division…Houston has lost three (3) straight and is still tied for first with Indianapolis, two-time defending B-10 champs Tennessee…Next Loss: B-10 pollsters have run out of jokes about how AFC South is losing automatic berth in NFL playoffs…Feel free to insert own, preferably funny, line here.

9. This Is Don Criqui ReportingDespite constant phone calls, texts from agent for something called Spero Dedes, B-10 staffers pleased to announce Hall of Fame announcer has signed on for 2017 and another season of heralding second worst game on NFL weekly schedule with hilarious This Is Don Criqui Reporting lead line.

10. Donald Trump For better or worse – probably worse – President-elect Trump’s Government by Tweet and renegade phone calls that get protocol buff’s shorts in a knot, heralds a changing of the guard in America…Next Loss: Our entire country, as it collapses sometime before this half-century is out.

This Week’s Clash of the Titans: Cincinnati at Cleveland
This Is Don Criqui Reporting: New York (A) at San Francisco

The silliness of the College Football Playoff

The Daily Dose/December 7, 2016
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

HUT, HUT HIKE: Good gravy this was silly, even by current American major college football standards. After three months of deciding things on the field, a group of humans – a group which includes a chick for some reason – voted on the four teams to be invited to participate in the College Football Playoff.

Good News: All four teams are deserving of the opportunity to play for the national title.

Bad News: Several other teams were, too. The champions of the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences were not invited, though Ohio State, a fine team who nonetheless didn’t qualify for the Big Ten title game much less play in it or win it, was invited.

Fly In The Ointment: We don’t understand this at all. The CFP selection committee thinks Ohio State is better than Penn State, but we know this isn’t true because Penn State beat Ohio State.

Now, we realize there are assorted variables in college football. Penn State had early season losses to Pitt and an ugly, blowout loss to Michigan, but they’ve won nine straight and won the Big Ten. Call us crazy, but we would’ve invited Penn State instead of Ohio State.

Roll Call: Penn State, USC, Oklahoma, Western Michigan, among others, all should’ve had an opportunity to compete for the national championship.

Dry, Technical Matter: Why the NCAA never got around to holding to holding a football playoff is not entirely known. The NCAA was formed in 1906 and conducted its first championship in 1915 (track and field), so there was certainly precedent. Up until the past generation or so college football was always a very regional sport and back then no one was really clamoring for a championship playoff. The AP began selecting national champions in 1935 and UPI began their poll in 1950 and by then there were enough bowl games entrenched so that the NCAA really couldn’t start one even if they wanted to.

Please Pass The Dry, Technical Matter: The NCAA divided into University and College divisions in 1956 and Divisions I, II and III in 1973, when it held its first football playoffs for their lower divisions.

WE THE PEOPLE: Delaware becomes the first state to ratify the United States Constitution on this date in 1787. The Constitution had been approved in Philadelphia by the Constitutional Convention in September to replace the Articles of Confederation. The new constitution would go into effect in 1789.

Get Out Your Conspiracy Theories: Japan attacks the United States naval installation at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii on this date in 1941. 2,400 Americans died in the attach, which led to America entering World War II a couple of days later.

FunFact: The attack yielded one Japanese prisoner, a naval officer named Kazuo Sakamaki. Ensign Sakamaki was assigned to small submarine that was part of the attack. His submarine was armed with a couple of torpedoes but assorted errors led to Sakamaki’s submarine running aground. The self-destruct charges didn’t work. Four other crew members died and Sakamaki ended up unconscious on the beach, where he was taken prisoner and shipped to the mainland where he was held prisoner.

3..2…1…Blastoff: Apollo 17, man’s final voyage to the moon, lifts off on this date in 1972. It would land on the moon on December 10 and Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmidt would conduct three moon walks over the course of three days. Apollo 17 would return to Earth on December 19.

Great Moments In Lethal Injection: Charles Brooks, Jr becomes the first American to be executed using lethal injection on this date in 1984. Brooks, who was black, and his accomplice Woody Loudres, who is white, had been convicted of murdering a car salesman.

FunFact: Loudres served eleven years of a 40-year sentence before being released on parole.

Thought For The Day: We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. – Albert Einstein

Answer To The Last Trivia Question: Mount Union has won the most NCAA football playoff national championships, with 12.

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 15- Bowl Game Edition!

America’s Funniest Guy on Facebook!

Editor’s Note: With Army/Navy game still to be played – and the Sgt Bilko Trophy, symbolic of service academy lousiness, riding on the outcome – the final Bottom Ten of the season will move next week.

The Bottom Ten
NCAA/Week 15 – Bowl Game Edition
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Tis the season, as the Bottom Ten pollsters open up the manhole cover to inspect the carnage that can only be the 2016-17 college football bowl season!

And the numbers are astonishing, even by Bottom Ten standards. There was a time when all bowl games featured two teams with winning records but, thankfully for this column, that time has long passed.

This year less than half of all bowl games – exactly half if Army beats Navy – will have two (2) teams with winning records.

At least four (4) bowl games, and maybe five (5) – again, Army is key here – will feature two (2) teams that do not have winning records and 25 percent of all bowl teams were not good enough to produce winning records. Three (3) of these teams lost more games than they won.

All of which found Bottom Ten pollsters scratching their heads and wondering: we don’t have a NCAA Division I football playoff for this?

This year’s sewer:

  1. Heart of Dallas Bowl
Details: December 27, Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Texas
Teams: Army (6-6) vs North Texas (5-7)
Reasons To Watch: You’re wondering if Zaxbys – the title sponsor – sells fast food, t-shirts or helicopters…You’re are genuinely excited to see latest crop of Army officer candidates take on future cattle rustlers and oil wildcatters…You weigh 700 pounds, are completely immobile and are unable to do anything else.
Reasons Not To Watch: Second meeting of 2016 for matchup nobody was clamoring for in the first place…Both teams on a roll, having combined to lose seven (7) of their last ten (10)... North Texas – whose 1-11 squad just missed a bowl berth last year – is playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl for the second time in three years.
Bottom Line: Easily takes B-10 Bowl of the Year honors, as long-time B-10 fan(s) getting misty eyed over this fiasco that features two B-10 legacy teams.

2. New Orleans Bowl
Details: December 17; Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana
Teams: Southern Mississippi (6-6) vs. UL-Lafayette (6-6)
Reasons To Watch: You’re excited to see teams from two (2) conferences challenging for B-10 Conference of the Year honors – Sun Belt, Conference USA – get it on…You’ve seen UL-Lafayette’s four (4) previous New Orleans Bowl appearances this decade and don’t want to see the streak end.
Reasons Not To Watch: You live north of the 32nd parallel…It’s time to put the snow tires on…It’s nap time.
Bottom Line: Organizers – already planning to tarp over most of seating area to accommodate crowd anticipated to be in the dozens – now looking to tarp over field so nobody has to watch this mess.

3St. Petersburg Bowl
Details: December 26; Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
Teams: Miami, Ohio (6-6) vs Mississippi St (5-7)
Reasons To Watch: You want to see if Miami’s 108th ranked offense will be able to move the ball against Mississippi State’s 110th ranked defense…You want to see if Miami – which started 0-6 – can go from the B-10 medal stand to the victory in second-rate bowl game in same season…You’re from Mississippi and you got your first color TV for Christmas.
Reasons Not To Watch: It’s the day after Christmas and you have a new assault rifle to play with.
Bottom Line: Another thriller featuring two (2) teams unable to muster winning records played in a baseball stadium…Yes, this is way better than any game an NCAA Division I football playoff could ever muster.

4. Motel 6 Cactus Bowl
Details: December 27; Chase Field, Phoenix Arizona
Teams: Baylor (6-6) vs. Boise State (10-2)
Reasons To Watch: Baylor has lost six (6) straight and you want to see if a school that has lost six (6) straight and is mired in scandal can beat a ten (10)-win team that plays its home games on blue turf.
Reasons Not To Watch: Game sponsored by cheap, national motel chain that used to be presenting sponsor of B-10 championship trophy…Baylor has lost six (6) straight.
Bottom Line: In a city with both an NFL stadium and a major college stadium, game played at baseball field.

5. Hawaii Bowl
Details: December 24; Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii
Teams: Middle Tennessee State (8-4) vs Hawaii (6-7)
Reasons To Watch: Want to continue treasured holiday tradition of seeing lengths cameramen will go to not show 50,000 empty seats at Aloha Stadium…it’s Christmas Eve and even this beats going to church and the family gathering.
Reasons Not To Watch: It’s Christmas Eve and you have church to attend and family coming over and even that beats watching the Hawaii Bowl.
Bottom Line: Hawaii has losing record, but since they’d be in the area anyway, organizers decided to save on airfare, lodging and invite them…Only major bowl without a title sponsor, though B-10 pollsters manfully concede Hawaii itself is a major travel destination.

6. Pinstripe Bowl
Details: December 28; Yankee Stadium, New York City, New York
Teams: Pitt (8-4) vs Northwestern (6-6)
Reasons To Watch: You’re wondering why the hell they’re playing football in Yankee Stadium…The novelty of seeing B-10 Hall of Famers Northwestern playing in a bowl game has yet to wear off…TV offers better vantage point than closest 50-yard line seat located 50-yards from field.
Reasons Not To Watch: Pitt beat both Penn State and Clemson while Northwestern lost to Illinois State, so game probably won’t be any good.
Bottom Line: Pinstripe Bowl makes annual appearance in survey because Yankee Stadium worse bowl venue since 1964 Donkey Show Bowl played on Avenida Revoluccion in Tijuana, Mexico.

7. Sun Bowl
Details: December 30; Sun Bowl, El Paso, Texas
Teams: North Carolina (8-4) vs Stanford (9-3)
Reasons To Watch: Sun Bowl actually second oldest bowl game behind Rose Bowl, and you’ve been watching it for years…It’s one of only four (4) bowl games not televised by ESPN/ABC, and you want to see if you’re remote still switches to CBS station.
Reasons Not To Watch: This might be OK to watch if you find yourself in front of a TV around kickoff time, a nice throwback to when bowls were actually fun to watch. Go ahead and enjoy.
Bottom Line: With stadium located only one-third of a mile from Mexican border, pregame festivities expected to feature popular, patriotic swim-over in always touching “missing Mexican” formation

8. Rose Bowl
Details: January 2, 2017; Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California
Teams: Penn State (11-2) vs USC (9-3)
Reasons To Watch: It’s Monday, January 2 and the Rose Bowl is on…You live where it’s freezing and want to fantasize about moving to California…Despite everything college football does to shoot itself in the foot, the Rose Bowl is still a highlight of the sports calendar.
Reasons Not To Watch: Days of Pac-12, Big Ten champions competing long gone now, as USC wasn’t even good enough to qualify for Pac-12 title game…Penn State once kept a child molester on staff and should have had football program sent back to stone age instead of still being allowed to compete and make money at major division level.
Bottom Line: One proud institution, Rose Bowl now either a sideshow national semifinal for sham College Football Playoff or, like this year, a consolation prize.

9. NCAA Division I National Championship Game
Details: Whoops! This game does not exist!
Teams: See above.
Reasons To Watch: Would be an instant classic of American sports. If it existed, of course, which it doesn’t…Instead we get the Malt O’Meal Beef O’Bradys Bowl or a game played in the national track and field stadium of the Bahamas.
Reasons Not To Watch: It doesn’t exist.
Bottom Line: A 32-team NCAA Division I football tournament could begin Thanksgiving weekend and end on New Year’s Day, the last day anyone should care about college football…It would become an American classic quicker than you could say “weak non-conference schedule”.

10. Amos Alonzo-Stagg Bowl
Details: December 17; Salem Football Stadium, Salem, Virginia; The NCAA Division III National Championship Game
Teams: Winners of Mount Union/Mary Hardin-Baylor and John Carroll/UW-Oshkosh semifinals
Reasons To Watch: Despite fact NCAA likes to claim missed class time as reason for not sponsoring playoff, Stagg Bowl participants are playing in fifth playoff game of season, all while trying to balance real college classes and chasing girls.
Reasons Not To Watch: There is no reason not to watch this game. It concludes a real, live NCAA-sponsored 32-team football playoff.
Bottom Line: Real college kids who pay their own way leaving their blood and guts on the field for a genuine, honest-to-goodness NCAA national football championship.

This Week’s Clash of the Titans: Army vs. Navy, at Baltimore – The loser earns the Sgt Bilko Trophy – symbolic of service academy lousiness.

 Hut, Hut Hike…

The Daily Dose/December 3, 2016
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

HUT, HUT HIKE: Official Daily Dose Fave the Mount Union Purple Raiders football team continues its romp to its 20th Amos Alonzo-Stagg Bowl and its 13th NCAA Division III national championship, visiting Alfred College in Alfred, New York today in the quarterfinals.

Breakdown Segment: This is the second meeting between Mount Union and Alfred and we were as surprised as you to find out our Purple Raiders lead the series 1-0! In 2010 the Purple Raiders defeated the Saxons in the quarterfinals 37-7.

Alfred is somehow 12-0 and champions of the misfits that comprise the Empire 8 Conference. They defeated Bridgewater State (33-27 OT) and Western New England (30-24) in the first two rounds.

More Breakdown Segment: The winner of this game – Mount Union, of course – will play the winner of the Mary Hardin-Baylor/Wheaton game.

Getting To Know You: Alfred University – certainly not to be confused with the commoners at nearby Alfred State – was founded in 1836 by the Seventh Day Baptists and was originally known as the Select School. The origin of the name Alfred is unknown, though legend has it it was named after Alfred the Great, King of the Saxons. It has about 2,300 students and has won zero (0) NCAA Division III football championships, twelve less than Mount Union.

Great Moments In Racial Tolerance: Alfred admitted its first black students in the 1850’s, the second college to do so.

Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show: It’s been a touring show for Mount Union this postseason, with the Raiders playing their third consecutive road game. Despite being defending national champions, the NCAA selection committee got snitty following Mount Union’s loss to a fine John Carroll team in the season finale. The win gave John Carroll the Ohio Athletic Conference title and an automatic berth into the

Yeah, Yeah, Whatever:  Speaking of John Carroll, they will play the evil bastards from Wisconsin-Whitewater today in another quarterfinal. The Blue Streaks had to make sure their shot records were up-to-date before getting on the bus for the trip to virus infested UW-Wherever, but otherwise should be in good health.

NCAA rules more or less mandate a winner in this game, who will face the winner of the St Thomas/UW-Oshkosh-By-Gosh in the national semifinals.

Dry, Technical Matter: Mount Union is in the national quarterfinals for the 25th consecutive year.

MEANWHILE: Major division college football, which has a four-team invitational playoff, could be facing delays in announcing which teams are going to which loser, second-rate bowl games.

The problem is Navy, which is enjoying a fine season. The Midshipmen are playing Temple in the American Athletic Conference championship game today and a win might keep them alive in the race for a berth in the Cotton Bowl.

It might not. Undefeated Western Michigan defeated Ohio 29-23 to win the Mid-America Conference title, a win that just might clinch the Cotton Bowl berth for them.

Either way, the selection committee might want to see the results of the Army/Navy game on December 10 to decide which bowl Navy goes to. This will affect other bowl assignments, meaning some teams and games might only have a few days to make arrangements and sell tickets.

FunFact: A 32-team NCAA Division I football tournament could’ve begun Thanksgiving weekend and end on New Year’s Day, don’t even start. It would keep sports fans completely spellbound for an entire month and making everyone involved a pile of cash besides. Instead, we face the possibility of not knowing who will be competing in the Fritos Bean Dip Classic until the last minute.

Oh, The Humanity: It could also adversely affect the Bottom Ten Bowl Game edition, scheduled to move next Tuesday. Or it could result in hilarious, fresh material, never in any great supply at Bottom Ten headquarters.

A FREE SPEECH FREE ZONE: Over 800 students are arrested at UC Berkley on this date in 1964 after overtaking the administration building and conducting a sit-in.

God, We Love This State: The students were, in finest California tradition, protesting the prohibition of protests on UC campuses.

Insert Own ObamaCare Joke Here: The world’s first human heart transplant is conducted in Cape Town, South Africa on this date in 1967. It was conducted by Dr Christiaan Barnaard on a 53-yar-old male named Louis Washkansky, who was dying of heart disease.

Oh, What The Hell: After thoroughly examining Washkansky, Barnaard concluded nothing could be done to save him. So at 1 in the morning, after a 26-year-old man had died, Washkansky had his heart replaced in a 9-hour operation.

Fly In The Ointment: Washkansky would die of pneumonia on December 21.

Great Moments In Racial Tolerance: The donor who provided the heart, Denise Darvall, who had died in a car accident a few hours earlier, also had her kidneys donated to a 10-year-old black young man. Since Darvall was white, this caused no small amount of controversy in South Africa, where blacks and whites were still segregated.

Space…The Final Frontier: Pioneer 10 sends back the first close-up images of Jupiter on this date in 1973. Pioneer 10 had been launched in March, 1970 and Earth would receive her last signal in January, 2003, though the signal was very weak and provided no useable data.

Thought For The Day: The mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is opened. – The 14th Dali Lama

Answer To The Last Trivia Question: The only article of the 1783 Treaty of Paris that is still in force is the first one, which provides for the United States to be a sovereign nation
