The Daily Dose/November 11, 2016

The clamor was too much. The Daily Dose is back after yet another reader-depleting hiatus.

Both regular and new readers of this crap can expect the usual witless commentary on issues that may or may not be pressing or even interesting. The Thought for the Day and the Trivia feature will return, as will the ever-popular On This Date.

To make The Daily Dose experience as inconvenient as possible, past columns will be available at the Writer’s Shack.

The Daily Dose/November 11, 2016

WHILE WE WERE OUT: The Chicago Cubs won the World Series, defeating the Cleveland Indians four games to three. They did it the hard way, too, becoming the first team since 1985 to overcome a three games to one deficit and the first since 1979 to do so by winning the final two games on the road.

Uh, Did We Hear You Right?: Yes, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. It wasn’t really that big a surprise, either. They had favored since spring training and had the best record in the major leagues in 2016. 108 years after their last World Series win, and 71 years after their last appearance, the ultimate “W” flag flies over Wrigley Field.

The Cubs Are The Team I Favor This Base Ball Series: The Cubs won the 1908 World Series a month or so before William Howard Taft defeated William Jennings Bryan for the White House. Jennings had first run for president in 1896.

The Times They Are Really Changing: Cubs fans may not have to wait too long for their next title, either. They’re built for the long haul and could very well be back.

WHILE WE WERE OUT II: Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, produced by the biggest sewer of a campaign this nation has seen. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College, though Clinton barely won the popular vote.

Admit It, You Missed Dry, Technical Matter: Trump joins George W Bush, Benjamin Harrison, Rutherford B Hayes and John Quincy Adams as presidents who gained the presidency without having to be bothered to win the popular vote.

Oh, Good Gravy: Heck, Adams didn’t even get the most votes in the Electoral College. He lost both counts to Andrew Jackson, however, Jackson didn’t win enough electoral votes. Hilarity – and a bargain or two – in the House of Representatives ensued, and Adams was elected on the first ballot.

Back On Message: Trump was a freakazoid of a private citizen and an embarrassment as a presidential candidate and there is no reason to think he won’t be an embarrassment as president. On the plus side, there should be no shortage of material for halfwit writers – like us – to comment on.

20/20 Hindsight: Trump won because he gave an awful lot of Americans who felt their country slipping away the opportunity to believe what they wanted. Like Germans did when Hitler – who did the exact same thing – first came to power, they took advantage of that.

Hillary Clinton afforded her supporters the same opportunity and they took advantage of that, too. These were the two worst major party presidential candidates in our history.

The Big Picture: It didn’t really matter who won. Neither major party will change a thing. Four years from now we will still be at war and we will still be racking up mindless debt. The long-term prognosis for our country will still be total collapse by the time this half-century is out because America declined to make substantive changes to the way she is governed.

GAYLON FOR CONGRESS…VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN: We received about five percent of the vote in our race for the United States House of Representatives from Colorado’s 3rd District, about double what we received in our US Senate election in 2014.

GREAT MOMENTS IN RACE RELATIONS: Nat Turner, who had led a slave uprising in August, is hanged on this date in 1831. The uprising, in Southampton County, Virginia, led to the deaths of several dozen whites and more than 200 free and enslaved blacks. The revolt did nothing to end slavery in America, it merely made white men more angry.

Holy Crap: Justice was swift back then. After hiding out for a couple of months, Turner was captured on October 30 and tried on November 5.

Yay! No More War! World War I ends on this date in 1918, as the Allies and the Germans agree to ceasefire. Terms were largely dictated by the French, and the Germans were given the choice of either accepting them without negotiation or accepting them without negotiation. German resentment over this – more specifically Adolph Hitler’s resentment over this – was a major cause of World War II.

To add further import to the occasion, the armistice went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Boys Will Be Boys: To add more poignancy to the occasion, both sides kept piling up deaths until the last possible moment and over 2,700 warriors died on the 11th. One French unit lobbed shells into German lines timed so they would land within seconds of 11am and the final death is generally believed to be American Henry Gunther, killed by a sniper one minute before the hostilities were to end.

Ten Hut: The Tomb of the Unknowns – commonly known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – is dedicated by President Warren Harding at Arlington National Cemetery on this date in 1921.

Originally the tomb held the remains of an unidentified serviceman who died in World War I. It now holds remains from all of wars America has fought since then.

FunFact: The Vietnam War unknown was actually identified as Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Blassie. Blassie’s remains were returned to his family and the remains replaced.

FunFact II: The tomb was first guarded, by a civilian, in 1925, and the military took over the job a few months later. Since 1948 it has been guarded by soldiers from the Army’s 3rd US Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard.

Oh Yeah: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Guard Identification Badge is the second rarest award in the US military, behind the Astronaut Badge.

Thought For The Day: …when history starts to move underneath you, you’d better figure out how you’re going to ride it, or you’ll fall off. – Gore Vidal, Empire

Answer To The Last Trivia Question: Tennessee’s Andrew Johnson was the United States Senator from a succeeded state to remain in the US Senate.

Today’s Stumper: What major league baseball team now holds the record for the longest time since last winning the World Series? – Answer next time!

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 11

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 11
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Foremost Humorist

Cleveland: City of Champions.

First the Cavaliers win the NBA title, then the Indians win the American League pennant and now the Browns are eyeing the Dan Henning Trophy, symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy.

Don’t count out San Francisco and Jacksonville for Pete’s sake. Both those teams solidified their spots on the Bottom Ten medal stand with emphatic losses.

This week’s mess, as the nags approach the far turn:

  1. Cleveland Browns (0-9; lost to Dallas 35-10) – Browns starting to make 2008 Detroit Lions nervous, opening second half of campaign with blowout loss…Browns have lost 12 straight, 19 of 20 and 27 of last 30…Browns 30th NFL team to start season 0-9…Next Loss: Baltimore (Nov 10)

2. San Francisco 49ers (1-7; lost to New Orleans 41-23) – San Francisco waiting in wings following seventh (7th) straight loss…49ers prove old B-10 adage that if you rush for fewer than 100 yards and turn the ball over left and right, you can lose in this leage…Next Loss: at Arizona

3. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-6; lost to Kansas City 19-14) – Jaguars back in B-10 pollsters good graces, having lost three (3) straight following curious two (2) -game win skid…Owner Ghengis Khan pleased as three (3) turnovers lead to 13 Chiefs points, easily overcoming 25 first downs and 445 total yards…Next Loss: Houston

4. NFC West (12-18-2) – Takes first Pete Rozelle Award, issued to league’s worst division, of 2016…First place Seattle has lost one (1) straight, while bottom feeders have combined to lose twelve (12) straight…Next Loss: Insert usual loss of automatic berth in NFL playoffs line here.

5. San Diego Chargers (4-5; defeated Tennessee 43-45 ) – Won last game, but voters rejected, rather handily, tax measure written entirely by team that would have used tax money to fund new stadium…Good thing Chargers have an agreement in place to share new Los Angeles stadium with Rams as entire nation gets ready for Las Vegas Raiders/Los Angeles Chargers rivalry…Next Loss: Miami

6. American Media There was a time when real journalists would have had both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton out of the presidential race before the primaries, but that media is long gone, replaced by cheerleaders who did a great job of trumpeting the two worst major party candidates this nation has ever seen…Next Loss: They have nothing less to lose…We’ll keep getting crap like this as long as we tolerate it.

7. Gaylon For Congress (0-2) – Halfwit behind The Bottom Ten and other crap gets five (5) percent of the vote in Colorado’s 3rd District…This is actually about twice as good as he did in his epic 2014 US Senate run…Next Loss: 2018

8. Donald Trump A misfit private citizen and an embarrassment of a candidate now gets to govern a racist, mean, once-proud shooting gallery of a country…Trump’s only real talent of drawing attention to himself not expected to be to useful in new gig…Next Loss: America…Start the countdown, the collapse of this nation is on the clock.

9. American ElectorateFollowing a sewer of campaign that featured the two worst major party candidates ever, Donald Trump acountry that uwsed to know better  – Donald Trump – as president of the United States…The man some blame for the downfall of the USFL is now in charge of our country…Next Loss: Our republic as we know it…The only question is when.

10. Tie Games 0-0-2) – There weren’t any tie games in the NFL for the first time in a couple of weeks, but B-10 pollsters still on the rag over election results, so football games without winners – which really should’ve been done away with a generation ago, still hanging on to spot in survey…Next Loss: There are still no losers in tie games!!!

This Week’s Clash of the Titans: Houston at Jacksonville
This Is Don Criqui Reporting: San Francisco at Arizona

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 11

The Bottom Ten
NCAA/Week 11
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Foremost Humorist

One Bottom Ten showdown in the books, another on tap.

There’s no rest for the weary as Bottom Ten fan(s) – fresh from watching Rice take command of the race for the ESPNCup – symbolic of Bottom Ten supremacy – must now turn their attention to Saturday’s Kansas/Iowa State fiasco.

In other news, Earlham moved to 0-9 and can take the Continental Cup – issued to the team with the longest all-division losing streak in the NAFTA sphere of influence – home for the winter with a season-ending loss this week.

This week’s mess:

  1. Rice (1-8; lost to Florida Atlantic 42-25)
Mitigating Factors: Owls make big pitch for B-10 glory with clutch home loss in B-10 showdown…Offense comes back strong after opening-drive touchdown with two (2) interceptions, five (5) three (3) and outs…Consistent defense allows over 300 yards both running and passing…Rice ranks Dead Last in total Defense and whatever the hell Team Passing Efficiency Defense is.
Hoot! Hoot!: Owls can claim first B-10 title by losing out – never a given in the minefield that is C-USA play this year.
    Next Loss: at Charlotte

2. Kansas (1-8; lost to West Virginia 48-21)
Mitigating Factors: Defending B-10 champions still in decent position to repeat after dutiful road loss…KU never lets West Virginia think they’re in it, bursting out 31-0 halftime deficit…Jayhawks co-holders of Nation’s Longest Losing Streak, having lost eight (8) straight, and can claim third Tostitos Plaque – issued to team with longest losing streak in a season that actually incudes a win – by losing out.
Broad, Historical Context: Jayhawks on track for worst two (2)-season stretch since iconic 1987-88 squads combined for 2-19-1 mark.
Next Loss: Iowa State

3. Fresno State (1-9; lost to Colorado State 37-0)
Mitigating Factors: Bulldogs deny Notre Dame coveted B-10 medal stand berth with attention getting shutout loss…Defense breaks game open early, turning 3-0 deficit into 38-0 loss, allowing touchdowns on five straight possessions…Bulldogs show rushing game key to B-10 glory, ranking 126th in Rushing Defense, 120th in Rushing Offense.
FunFact: Bulldogs building strong B-10 foundation, having lost eight (8) straight and 16 of last 20.
Next Loss: Hawaii

4. Notre Dame (3-6; lost to Navy 28-27)
Mitigating Factors: Notre Dame kneeling reverently in B-10 medal stand narthex following the type of morale-building close loss that usually signifies strong B-10 finishing kick…Notre Dame hampered by pregame Navy Secretary order requiring Midshipmen to “kick living crap” out snotty Catholics…Irish high ranking attributed to big strength of schedule points racked up for losses to Michigan State, Duke and Texas.
Let Us Pray: Notre Dame can go a long way to claiming second Sgt Bilko Trophy – usually symbolic of service academy lousiness – with loss to Army this week.
Next Loss: vs Army (at San Antonio)

5. Earlham (0-9; lost to Bluffton 54-20
Mitigating Factors: Division III Quakers retain stranglehold on Continental Cup – issued to team with longest all-division losing streak in NATO – with 32nd straight loss…After offense makes game close – by Earlham standards, at least – with touchdown to make it 21-6, defense responds with 33 unanswered points to break it open…Entire squad getting smiley faces on playbook for only allowing Bluffton to score by running, passing football into end zone.
FunFact: Quakers have also lost 26 straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games.
Next Loss: at Rose-Hulman

6. Bowling Green (1-8; lost to Northern Illinois 45-20)
Mitigating Factors: Falcons still in hunt for B-10 glory following seventh (7th) straight loss…Falcons usually pretty good, and are newest members of B-10 Bleu Devil Club, after having lost seven (7) straight in a season for first time ever…With remaining opponents having a combined .667 losing percentage, Falcons can still achieve B-10 medal stand if they lose out and get some help.
Cold, Hard Truth: Despite only win coming in Week 2 against lower level team, Falcons can still lose out and be in unenviable position of missing out on both ESPNCup and Tostitos Plaque – issued to team with longest losing streak in a season that actually includes a win.
Next Loss: at Akron

7. Michigan State (2-7; lost to Illinois 31-27)
Mitigating Factors: Spartans adapting well to first trip to B-10, losing seventh straight…Close loss that wasn’t decided till stubborn offense refused to convert on fourth down with twelve (12) seconds left sets great tone for B-10 stretch run…Spartans face biggest B-10 test ever against lousy Rutgers team this week.
FunFact: There was no way to know it then, of course, but Week 2 win over Notre Dame could keep Spartans off B-10 medal stand.
Next Loss: Rutgers

8. Power Five (V) Conferences
Mitigating Factors: Large school monopoly on college football extends to B-10 as Gang of Five (5) claims first ever B-10 Conference(s) of the Week award…Lost in the cacophony of the MAC and C-USA is the fact that six (6) of the eight (8) teams that have lost at least five (5) straight come from the Power Five conferences.
FunFact: Six (6) more Power Five (5) teams have lost four (4) straight.

9. UMess (2-8; lost to Troy 52-31)
Mitigating Factors: UMess defense again good enough to overcome pesky offense, getting outscored 24-7 to end game…Though coveted B-10 hardware probably out of reach, UMess playing for pride, trying to become Minuteman squad to finish season with two (2) wins since 1902 squad finished 2-3-2…B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” UMess – which defeated Wagner last week – first team to split against schools named after people in consecutive weeks since Tijuana Tech lost to Felipe’s Body Shop Tech and defeated Jose College in 1969.
FunFact: Minutemen playing independent schedule this year, hoping strong B-10 showing qualifies them for either disbanding football altogether or membership in Conference USA.
Next Loss: at BYU

10. Iowa State (1-8; lost to Oklahoma 34-24)
Mitigating Factors: In tough B-10 race, it’s not only if you lose, but how you lose, as Cyclones trail other one-win teams due to unusually close loss to traditional national power…Cyclones, though, do show mettle of B-10 contenders by rushing for more than 100 yards and refusing to turn the ball over and still losing….Cyclones will go as far as complete lack of running game, inability to stop run takes them, ranking 103rd in Rushing Offense and 108th in Rushing Defense.
FunFact: Big showdown this week against evil Jayhawks will show which Big 12 team advances to B-10 regionals.
Next Loss: at Kansas

This Week’s Clash of the Titans: Iowa State at Kansas
This One Isn’t Going To Be Any Good, Either: Army vs Notre Dame
Big Ten Thriller of the Week: Rutgers at Michigan State
