ALL OVER BUT THE IMPEACHING: 100 years from now, when historians are analyzing the end of the Republican Party, the rushing of GOP House members into a closed-door impeachment hearing might be looked back on as an important, if not defining, moment.

There was really no point to it. There were GOP members on the committees conducting the hearing and the stormtrooper’s sole purpose was to muddy the waters and make the process seem like an illegitimate circus. It had every air of desperate members of a dying party rallying around an indefensible president.

Fly In The Ointment: Their protest was without merit. There was not, and has not been, anything of substance from the GOP on the details emerging from the proceedings. All they have offered is blather about the process.

Constitution 101: This blather is without merit as Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution is very clear on the matter:

The House of Representatives … shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.

Dry, Technical Matter: That’s it. The Constitution otherwise offers no guidance, and offers zero barriers, to how the House goes about impeaching a federal official. They can do it however they see fit. They can hold their hearings in a US capitol conference room or they can hold them at third base at Nationals Park. They don’t even have to have a hearing nor do they have to impeach for a criminal offense. To quote Alexander Hamilton, writing in Federalist #65, impeachment is for:

…those offences which proceed from the misconduct of public men, or, in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: Even considering the broad scope of the House’s impeachment powers, the president is being treated fairly. His basic defense of lying, smearing and tweeting has not, is not and will not serve him, or our country, well.

Around 1300 or so I get a call from a kid named Ken…Or he sounded like a kid in his 20’s…Some research showed he’s actually a bit older than that…Anyway, he’s my counterpart at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), their district commander up here, and he said he was calling VSOs in the district and introducing himself…Yes, sir, an appropriate call to make but good gravy, this kid was a firehose of information…There were all sorts of programs he’d taken part in for those with PTSD and he wanted me to know about each of them and there were a dozen other things, so many I stopped taking notes…I ended up emailing him – poor kid has ‘kidney stones’ as part of his email address, thanks he said to his service in the sandbox – so he’s be able to send me the very latest and keep me in the loop.

In 1825 – The Erie Canal – connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes via the Hudson River – opens to commercial traffic. There were no civil engineers in the US at the time and the project was run by men with little surveying, engineering or construction experience. Construction also required innovations in felling trees, moving earth and cutting through limestone, challenges which were all met. Construction had begun in 1817 and the canal is estimated to have cut overland shipping costs by 90 percent. At the time it was the second-longest canal in the world today it is the sixth-longest.

In 1985 – In one of the most famous missed calls in the pre-instant replay era, umpire Don Denkinger calls Jorge Orta of the Kansas City Royals safe at first base when he was really out, leading to the Royals defeating the St Louis Cardinals 2-1 in Game 6 of the World Series. Orta was later thrown out at third base on an attempted sacrifice and the Cardinals weren’t helped by a passed ball and an uncaught foul pop up. The win tied the series at three games apiece, and the Royals won their first World Series title the following night, defeating the Cardinals 11-0.

In 1959 – Bobby Darin is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fourth of nine non-consecutive weeks with Mack the Knife. It was Darin’s fourth Top 10 song and remains his only #1 hit. The song also went to #1 in Great Britain, peaked at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart and ranked #3 on Billboard’s 60th-anniversary chart last year. Mack the Knife was the first song to spend nine weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, a record that would later be matched by Percy Faith (Theme From a Summer Place) and the Beatles (Hey Jude). The song was replaced at #1 after six weeks by Mr Blue by the Fleetwoods for one week, before returning to #1.

THIS JUST IN: Language, of course, evolves. It’s why the language spoken by the Frisians who left the northern coast of the Netherlands evolved into Old English and then into the language you are reading right now. It’s why ‘idiot’ changed into ‘mentally retarded’, which itself turned into ‘mentally challenged’, with idiot now being a failry common insult, at least around here.

Also common are words being shortened. We won’t bore you with a myriad of examples, we will only bore you with two: stat and exam.

Yeah, This Is A Bulletin: Stat is short for ‘statistic’  drawn from a German word and today means a fact drawn from a quantity of numerical data.

Thank You Captain English: Exam is short for ‘examination’ which means, among other things, a detailed inspection or a test of knowledge. It comes from a Latin word meaning to test or weigh.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: We approve of both of these, and most others, and use stat and exam more than we use the originals they came from.

Fly In The Ointment: For some reason, though, the seemingly recent trend of shortening ‘merchandise’ to ‘merch’ is annoying us no end. This could be because we’ve heard it pronounced two different ways: ‘merk’ and ‘merch’. ‘Sitch’ being used in lieu of ‘situation’ also annoys us. Maybe there’s a -ch bias we have that we are unaware of. Maybe we’re turning into old fuss budgets.

And You Wonder Why You Don’t Get Invited To More Parties: We tend to prefer a more formal and precise use of English, so if we ever open up a store here at the site, you can bet the link won’t read “Merch”. It probably won’t say “merchandise” either, because that word annoys us, too, sometimes. It will probably say “Stuff”.

The Diary of a NobodySparrow reports the restaurant on the end of town is closing. Today’s Diary.

The problem I’ve always thought is, like some of the dumpy houses for sale here, is it has the curb appeal of a sanitation plant…There is not an entrance on Main Street, there’s one in the back and off to one side, the grass and landscaping are unattractive and the place always looks uninviting and, worst of all, it always looks closed…The food was good – not as good as the diner’s – tho the service was dead slow like the diner’s, too…So now we’re all going to starve here in our small town…The diner remains closed and now the restaurant is closing and now the only place left to eat is the bar where the service is casual and flippant and you have a 50/50 chance of getting a properly cooked meal.

In 1962 – During Day 10 of the Cuban Missile Crisis, United States Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson confronts his Soviet Union counterpart with pictures of Soviet missiles in Cuba at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, the Soviet declined to confirm their existence. The US also began enforcing its naval blockade of Cuba. Results were mixed, with the Navy failing to intercept one ship, while boarding another before clearing it to proceed.

In 1998 – Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos ties the NFL record when he kicks a 63-yard field goal as the Broncos defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-24. Elam tied the record that had been established by Tom Dempsy of the New Orleans Saints in 1970. The record was later tied by Sebastian Janikowski in 2011 and David Akers in 2012 and is now held by Matt Prater, who kicked a 64-yard field goal in 2013.

In 1980 – Barbra Streisand is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Woman In Love. The song also went to #1 in 13 other countries, including Great Britain, West Germany and Australia and also topped Billboard’s adult contemporary chart. It was Streisand’s fifth and final #1 song and her ninth of twelve Top 10 hits. The song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb.

MOUSEKETEERS, ROLL CALL: Bolivia. Hong Kong. Spain. Lebanon. Chile. There are other places, too, where the protests are, and have been, on. Our fellow world citizens are protesting everything from transit fare increases to fuel shortages to extradition bills. The entire world isn’t on fire, but it might seem that way to some

Dry, Technical Matter: They are protesting everywhere except, seemingly, in America. Here we’re taking it. We’re taking mass shootings. We’re taking a president whose only talent is drawing attention to himself, who has no regard for anyone but himself, who thinks the moon is part of Mars and that the Continental Army won the Revolution by securing British airports. We’re taking a government that is a partisan, fractured and bickering mess incapable of doing anything of substance.

@USA: America, by and large, is not in any particular mood to rock the boat. Too bad, because the boat needs to be rocked.

Stop Us If You’ve Heard This Before: Our country has been at war every day for the past 30 years and we are $22 trillion in debt, a figure that grew by $1 million in the few seconds it took to write this sentence.

Running The Numbers: Despite an economy that is believed to be doing well, 10% of Americans get food stamps (actually, it’s an EBT card, now) and more than one-third of us, 35.5%, received some sort of government assistance in 2017, an astonishingly high figure that is not a sign of a flourishing economy.
Source: US Census Bureau

Some Philosophy Crap: Friends, we get the government we deserve. We have a half-cocked, half-witted president because we elected one. We have a government incapable of governing because we elected one. We have a violent government producing a violent country and a violent world because we’ve been electing one for years.

Gaylon For US Senate: Vote Early, Vote Often: We deserve better than this. We deserve a flourishing country and we deserve a country that both Americans and the world respect again. But nothing good is going to happen in this country until we start protesting, too. Not in the streets because police departments armed like the Fifth Marines will mow us over, but at the ballot box on Election Day.

More Stop Us If You’ve Heard This Before: We will always get the government we deserve. We deserve better than what the status quo is giving us and they are not going to change anything because if they were they would have done so by now. It’s up to us to dismiss the status quo.

#TeamAmerica: It starts with you and it starts with me and it starts on Election Day 2020.

…the race for the most coveted trophy in sports – The Dan Henning Trophy, symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – is still as wide open as a receiver in the Cincinnati secondary.

Giants petitioning NFL for ‘technical win’ designation, pointing out that had they not committed three (3) turnovers and if Easter bunny actually existed they probably would have won game…

In 1861 – The first transcontinental telegraph in the United States is completed in Salt Lake City, connecting the east coast of the United States with the west coast. The project totaled 27,500 poles and 2,000 miles of telegraph wire, cost $500,000 to build and $1 a word to send a message – roughly $14 million and $29 in today’s money. The telegraph put the Pony Express out of business two days later and the telegraph ran until 1869, when it was replaced with a multi-wire system.

In 1943 – The Green Bay Packers establish a new NFL record, intercepting nine passes in a 27-6 win over the Detroit Lions. Also in the game, Detroit quarterback Frank Sinkwich tied an NFL record by throwing seven interceptions, a record that was broken by Jim Hardy of the Chicago Cardinals who threw eight in a 1950 game. The Packers broke the team record of eight, done by the Chicago Bears in the 1940 NFL Championship Game and the record was tied in 1965 by the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 1970 – The Jackson 5 are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of five consecutive weeks with I’ll Be There. The song was also in its third of six weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s seventh biggest song of the year. It was the fourth #1 song – all consecutive – of 1970 for the group on both charts, their final #1 pop hit and the fourth of six #1s on the soul chart. The song returned to #1 in 1992, done by Mariah Carey.

Notes from around the human experience…

THIS IS GOING TO BE BORING, ISN’T IT?: One of the things we don’t do too much of here is talk about writing. Our working theory is writing is much like making sausage or giving birth: nobody really wants to hear too many of the details, they only want to enjoy the finished product. However, a couple of things happened this week that you may – or you may not – find interesting.

Oh, Crap: First was Tuesday’s NCAA Bottom Ten. It was, frankly, very funny, as funny a Bottom Ten as we’ve written and we’ve written some funny ones over the years. It was so good we put in our personal hall of fame, a rarity.

Fly In The Ointment: We are not going to tell you the lines we think are funny because we’ve learned over the years that you readers sometimes have tastes that differ from ours: it is hardly unprecedented for lines we think are funny to draw yawns and for you to contact us saying lines we pulled out of our arse at the last-minute are the very last words in humor.

Some Philosophy Crap: Writing something you think is your very best poses challenges because it is as if you are saying everything else you’ve produced is crap. Nothing is further from the truth, though. When we sit down to ply the writer’s trade here we aim to deliver our very best. Which we do. You’re entitled to our very best because if we’re issuing less than that we’re not writing, we’re typing. It’s sort of like running track: sometimes you turn in a personal best, but usually you don’t. Same thing here. We sit down to say what we feel needs to be said and sometimes you’re a bit better than you’ve been before. In any endeavor, this remains one of life’s great prizes.

How Gentle Is The Rain: The other item concerns the popular On This Date feature. The third item is reserved for a song that was #1 on a Billboard chart, usually the Hot 100, but sometimes from a predecessor or the soul or country chart. Billboard charts are referenced because they’ve long been the standard for American charted music. It’s what Casey Kasem based American Top 40 off of for years.

Dry, Technical Matter: Billboard is not the sole source, however, and today we feature the #1 song from Cashbox magazine, which ran their Top 100 chart from 1950-96. The song is a personal favorite that only made the runner-up spot on the Hot 100 and we were in the mood to write about it so sue us.

Sparrow: “You turn her against me when you two are back there, don’t you…You hold up my picture and…”

In 1983 – Two military barracks in Beirut are attacked with truck bombs. The first explosion was a barracks housing United States Marines and the second, minutes later, at a barracks housing French forces. A total of 307 people died, a figure which includes six civilians and two suicide bombers. US personnel were ordered out of Lebanon, due mainly to eroding support in Congress, the following February.

In 1993 – The Toronto Maple Leafs establish a new NHL record for consecutive wins to start a season with nine, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0. The Maple Leafs would extend the record to ten before losing their first game on Oct. 30 to Montreal. Research into whose record they broke was inconclusive, though the record was matched in 2006 by the Buffalo Sabres. The Maple Leafs would finish the season with 43 wins, losing in the Western Conference Finals to the Vancouver Canucks.

In 1965 – The Toys are at #1 on the Cashbox Top 100 – one of several sources that have chronicled American charted music over the years – for their only week with A Lover’s Concerto. It was the first of two chart singles for the Toys and remains their biggest hit. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #5 in Great Britain and later peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at #4 on their soul chart. The melody was based on the 18th-century keyboard piece Minuet in G major.

THE MORE THINGS DON’T CHANGE…: It’s been over a year since Jamal Khashoggi walked into the Saudi embassy in Istanbul and soon found himself dead and dismembered. It soon became clear Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents and that it was not entirely beyond comprehension Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was in on it, too.

…The More They Don’t Change: It also soon became clear the Saudis would get away with it. The Trump Administration shamefully waved away the matter and did their darndest to usher the Saudi crown prince back onto the world stage. The veil began to lift at a G20 meeting in June as countries, paced by a disinterested America, went about the process of dismissing Khashoggi’s murder so everyone could resume making money off and with the Saudis again. President Trump did everything but rub the crown prince’s feet while having Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spread za’atar on the prince’s morning flatbread. Pakistan has given the crown prince their highest civilian honor after signing assorted, billion-dollar investment deals.

Fly In The Ointment: The UN did get their shorts in a knot in June when they issued a report saying, among other things, there was:

…credible evidence, warranting further investigation of high-level Saudi officials’ individual liability, including that of the Crown Prince.

Yeah, Yeah, Whatever: This could not have been met with a bigger collective international yawn had prizes been issued for ignoring it. Even we’ve stumbled a bit here. We used to provide occasional updates, but we’ve been too busy ranking lousy college football teams to bother lately.

USA! USA! Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the November 2020 G20 summit. While it is not clear that President Trump will lead the crown prince pep rally, it is even now expected to be well-attended, which all but assures Khashoggi died in vain and his death will not be punished.

Business As Usual: The killing itself isn’t a big surprise. Governments have been carrying out precautionary murders like this since time immemorial. All of us should be ashamed, though, by our government’s reaction to it. We’ve allowed our government to ignore it, which has allowed the world to ignore it. US insistence on accountability, both in public and in private, would have ensured we would be getting more than the secret trial the Saudis are currently holding. Sure, some hapless lower level prince might be offered up for a severe wrist-slapping, but the Saudis have brazened their way through the murder of Jamal Khashoggi with full US complicity.

God, Lighten Up, Will You?: Like a lot of things with the Trump Administration, we are the lesser for it. We deserve better than this, of course. We deserve a government that abhors and demands answers for murders like this, but we won’t have that until we demand better on Election Day.
